COURTESY CALL BY MR. NADER ALLOUCHE, ECOLE NORMALE SUPÉRIEURE AND MR. HAROLD HYMAN, HEAD OF THE WORLD NEWS AT THE OPINION INTERNATIONAL
On 23 November 2016, Mr. Mohamad Razdan Jamil, chargé d'affaires a.i. received a courtesy call from Mr. Nader Allouche, Ecole Normale Supérieure and Mr. Harold Hyman, Head of the World News at the Opinion International.
Realizing that moving towards a middle road or moderation rings in the ear of Malaysian personalities, possible collaboration with the Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMMF) was identified. Both sides expressed that sweeping issues underneath the carpet by cutting out expression of religion to keep it out of the public sphere would not solve problems as it is a case of being afraid of the lion and shooting at the tail.
Ideally silent moderates should drown out the voices of loud extremists but the latter gains notoriety when the press succumbs and bows to the altar of web hits and circulation numbers. Though extremists are responsible for destabilising the region, their success in selling oppression allows them to gain sympathizers, supporters, and recruits for their cause. There is a need to develop a narrative counter to that of the extremists. Instead of publishing feel good open letters denouncing extremism, concrete proposals that goes into the motor and changes something should be presented. As it is still in the preliminary stages, it is hoped that all parties can work together to accomplish a desired outcome.
