On 19 September 2020, the Embassy of Malaysia in Paris hosted a small celebration in conjunction with the nation’s Malaysia Day amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. The get-together was held at the newly renovated Home-Based Staff quarters at rue de la Faisanderie. The event was attended by about 60 Malaysians comprising all HBS and their families, representatives of the Malaysian Association in France (MAF) and the Malaysian Students’ Association in France (MASAF).

The function begin with a speech by H.E. Dato’ Dr. Azfar Mohamad Mustafar, Ambassador of Malaysia to France. In his remarks, the Ambassador quoted Tunku Abdul Rahman who said that he wanted to be remembered not as a powerful Prime Minister but a ‘happy’ Prime Minister, who was able to build a happy nation where, in his own words “people of different races, religions and classes could look at each other with affinity”. It rests upon us, the post-Merdeka generation to build on this legacy. Whether or not the beautiful tapestry envisioned by the late Tunku will be unravelled depends on how much we celebrate or exacerbate our differences.

The speech was then followed by a flag raising ceremony with Malaysians proudly standing tall belting out Negaraku.

The event continued with a donation of 500 Euros to MASAF by Dr. Georges Chapoutier and Ms. Wan Hua, members of MAF. During the get-together, the audience feasted on delicious Malaysian dishes such as nasi kandar, vade, teh tarik, aiskrim Malaysia and agar-agar santan.
