Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, will lead the Malaysian delegation to the 35th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits from 2 to 4 November 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand.


YAB Prime Minister will be accompanied by his spouse, YABhg. Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and YB Datuk Ignatius Darell Leiking, Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), as well as senior government officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, Wisma Putra, and MITI.


The Summit is the second and final ASEAN Summit to be hosted by Thailand as Chair of ASEAN for 2019, with the theme “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”. Under the theme, the Leaders are expected to note the work that has been done in implementing the ASEAN Leaders’ Vision Statement on Partnership for Sustainability which was adopted during the first Summit in June 2019, also in Bangkok. Related to this is the launching of the ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD). The Centre is one of the deliverables of Thailand ASEAN Chairmanship 2019, which will serve as a platform for coordinating and enhancing cooperation on sustainable development in the region and with the international community.


During the 35th ASEAN Summit, Leaders are expected to discuss and exchange views on the future direction of ASEAN and its community building efforts, the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, as well as on important regional and international issues.


The ASEAN Leaders will also participate in the ASEAN Plus One Summits with Leaders from China, India, Japan, and the United States (US), as well as the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN). YAB Prime Minister will also participate at the ASEAN Plus Three Summit, East Asia Summit (EAS), and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit.


At the invitation of the ASEAN Business and Advisory Council (ABAC), YAB Prime Minister will participate at the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit 2019 (ABIS 2019) on 2 November 2019, under the theme “Empowering ASEAN 4.0”. ABIS 2019 serves as a platform for the business community to engage with Leaders from ASEAN and beyond.


Apart from that YAB Prime Minister is scheduled to have bilateral meetings with his counterparts on the sidelines of the 35th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. Such meetings are expected to strengthen Malaysia’s bilateral relations with other countries and enhance understanding on pertinent regional and global issues.


The Leaders’ Summits will be preceded by meetings at both senior officials and ministerial levels.


The ASEAN Foreign Ministers will also participate at the signing ceremony of the Instrument of Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) by Bahrain and Germany. The TAC serves as a key code of conduct for inter-state relations in Southeast Asia, with the main objective to promote peace and security in the region.


Malaysia is one of the founding members of ASEAN that was established in 1967. Malaysia’s participation in the 35th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits is important as it reflects our continuous commitment to the organisation that has contributed to peace, stability and prosperity to the region.
