ASEAN FOREIGN MINISTERS’ RETREAT

NHA TRANG, VIETNAM

15-17 JANUARY 2020

YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, led the Malaysian delegation to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in Nha Trang, Vietnam, on 15-17 January 2020. He was accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As Chair of ASEAN for 2020, under the theme “Cohesive and Responsive”, Vietnam set forth five (5) priorities encompassing political-security, economic and socio-cultural elements, as well as the strengthening of ASEAN’s institutional capacity and its effectiveness. The ASEAN Foreign Ministers welcomed and expressed support for Vietnam’s Chairmanship.

The ASEAN Foreign Ministers discussed the implementation of decisions made at the 34th and 35th ASEAN Summits held in Thailand in 2019. They also considered measures to strengthen ASEAN’s relations with external partners and enhance ASEAN’s profile in the international arena.

In addition, the Ministers exchanged views on regional and global developments. With regard to the situation in Rakhine State, Malaysia underscored the importance of ensuring the repatriation of displaced persons as soon as possible. In conjunction with the 75th anniversary of the United Nations in 2020, Malaysia reaffirmed the importance of efforts to reform the UN Security Council, promote gender equality, involve civil society organisations and advance nuclear disarmament.

Malaysia also expressed its hope that the convening of interfaces between the ASEAN Leaders and representatives of the business community, civil society and youth would continue under Vietnam’s Chairmanship of ASEAN.
