COMMONWEALTH DAY 2020 MESSAGE

MONDAY, 9 MARCH 2020

This year’s Commonwealth Day is celebrated today, 9 March 2020. Malaysia joins the Commonwealth family of nations to celebrate this day with the theme, ‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming’. The year 2020 also marks the 71st anniversary of the Commonwealth. For over seven (7) decades, Commonwealth member countries have been committed towards a number of shared goals such as developing democratic societies; promoting peace and prosperity; and to improve the lives of Commonwealth citizens.

This year’s theme is fitting as we journey into a new decade. It highlights the diversity of the Commonwealth, connected through extensive and deep-rooted networks of friendship and goodwill in tackling major challenges of the world such as climate change, building peace and harmony and encouraging inclusive economic development, all of which requires collective participation from all segments of societies.

Malaysia has contributed and will continue to contribute to the Commonwealth in areas such as preventing and countering violent extremism, peace and security, trade, sustainable development, education, youth and empowerment of women. As a member of the Commonwealth Secretariat Countering Violent Extremism Unit Steering Group, Malaysia is working together with other Commonwealth member countries by sharing its experience in addressing violent extremism. Malaysia is also committed in addressing climate change and in sustainable ocean development through active participation in the Action Groups of the Commonwealth Blue Charter.

Malaysia looks forward to the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2020 scheduled to be held on 26-27 June 2020 in Kigali, Rwanda. Malaysia reaffirms its commitment to the various initiatives undertaken in the Commonwealth towards achieving global peace and shared prosperity.
