MEETING OF THE MINISTERS OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF MALAYSIA AND THE
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, 8 FEBRUARY 2021
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, Hon. Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein held a constructive and productive meeting with
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United
Arab Emirates (UAE) on 8 February 2021.
Both Ministers expressed their satisfaction at the current state of bilateral relations between Malaysia and the UAE. They agreed to foster
greater cooperation between the two close partners, especially in boosting economic opportunities as both countries are focused on a
strong and resilient economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, the two Ministers discussed important initiatives under
four (4) priority areas of cooperation in the post-pandemic era namely, trade and investments, agriculture and food security, health, and
diplomatic exchanges.
The working visit has provided a new impetus to the strong and brotherly ties between Malaysia and the UAE. The UAE is one of
Malaysia’s main trading partners. In 2019, total trade between Malaysia and the UAE was valued at USD6.43 billion. The UAE is also
Malaysia’s largest export destination and second-largest source of import in the West Asia region. Given Malaysia’s strategic location in the
Southeast Asian region, Malaysia is committed to being the gateway for the UAE to enter the Southeast Asian market, which is home to
over 650 million people.
The Hon. Foreign Minister, Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin will return to Malaysia on 9 February 2021, and will undergo mandatory quarantine
adhering to COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as prescribed by the Ministry of Health (MOH).
