Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Her Excellency Annalena Baerbock, will undertake an Official Visit to Malaysia on 12 January 2024 as part of her tour of Southeast Asia. This showcases the expanding ties between Malaysia and Germany following the State Visit by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Malaysia in February 2023.
During the visit, H.E. Baerbock will have a bilateral meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs the Honourable Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan at Wisma Putra. Apart from discussing Malaysia-Germany bilateral relations, both Ministers are expected to discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest, including Malaysia-European Union relations, ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations, cooperation under the ASEAN-Germany Development Partnership, climate change, renewable energy and the Middle East situation.
H.E. Baerbock will also pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister the Honourable Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Perdana Putra.
While in Putrajaya, H.E. Baerbock will also have an engagement session with representatives from local Islamic Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
Germany has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner among EU member countries since 2000, while Malaysia is the largest trading partner for Germany among ASEAN member states. From January to November 2023, Malaysia’s total trade with Germany increased by 7.2% to RM58.37 billion (USD12.81 billion) compared with the corresponding period in 2022.
