Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan undertook an official visit to Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia on 6 February 2024. This was the Foreign Minister’s maiden visit to Indonesia since his appointment as Foreign Minister on 12 December 2023. The Foreign Minister was accompanied by senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In Jakarta, the Foreign Minister paid a courtesy call on President of the Republic of Indonesia H.E. Joko Widodo, where he expressed that this visit was a continuation of the efforts by the Malaysian Government to further strengthen partnership with Indonesia and enhance cooperation at the ASEAN level. The Foreign Minister also touched on the need to intensify border trade activities at Tebedu and Entikong in order to reach USD30 billion in annual trade as agreed to by both leaders.
The Foreign Minister also had a meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia H.E. Retno L. P. Marsudi. Both sides discussed bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest. The meeting was an opportunity for both sides to take stock of the progress of bilateral cooperation and explore new potential avenues towards further strengthening the existing partnership.
Besides bilateral issues, the Foreign Minister also exchanged views with President Jokowi and his Indonesian counterpart on regional and global developments, focusing on the situation in Myanmar and conflict in Palestine. Both countries also reiterated their commitment to jointly address discrimination against palm oil. Malaysia and Indonesia are the world’s main exporting nations of the commodity.
The Foreign Minister also discussed resolving the crisis in Myanmar through ASEAN with his Indonesian counterpart and emphasised the importance of ASEAN unity in addressing this issue.
The Foreign Minister also reiterated Malaysia’s position, which is also shared by Indonesia, regarding the struggle of the Palestinian people and their inalienable right to a free and independent State of Palestine.
The Official Visit was a testament of the close and comprehensive ties between the two nations.
In 2023, Indonesia ranked as Malaysia’s third largest trading partner among ASEAN member states, with total trade amounting to RM111.21 billion (USD24.39 billion).
