OFFICIAL VISIT OF THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF MALAYSIA YB DATO’ SERI DIRAJA DR. ZAMBRY ABD KADIR TO THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN, 20 – 23 AUGUST 2023

 

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, YB Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir, will undertake an Official Visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran from 20-23 August 2023 at the invitation of his counterpart, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, His Excellency Hossein Amirabdollahian. This will be YB Foreign Minister’s maiden visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran after taking office on 2 December 2022. YB Foreign Minister will be accompanied by senior government officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and business delegations.

The visit reflects the commitment of the Unity Government under the leadership of Prime Minister, YAB Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim towards enhancing bilateral relations between Malaysia with all countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran.

During the visit, YB Foreign Minister is expected to pay a courtesy call on Iranian leaders. He is also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with his counterpart, His Excellency Hossein Amirabdollahian to follow up on the discussion held on the sidelines of the Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on 5 July 2023. Both Ministers are expected to take stock of the progress of existing bilateral cooperation and discuss ways to expand new areas of cooperation. Both Foreign Ministers are also expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest. YB Foreign Minister is also scheduled to hold an engagement session with local business leaders.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is Malaysia’s 8th largest trading partner and the 11th largest source of imports among the West Asian countries. Total trade in 2022 was RM3.69 billion (USD0.83 billion), an increase of 40.2 percent, compared to RM2.63 billion (USD0.64 billion) in 2021.
