CONTACT GROUP IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19
 

 

YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Prime Minister of Malaysia, will participate in the Online Summit Level Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Contact Group in Response to COVID-19, which will be held via video conferencing in the evening of 4 May 2020. This will be the first appearance by YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin at a NAM platform since he took office as the 8th Prime Minister of Malaysia.

 

The NAM Online Summit will be Chaired by His Excellency Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan as the current Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement for the term 2019-2022. The theme of the Summit is “United against the COVID-19” to promote international solidarity in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. In commemorating the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, which falls on 24 April every year, the Summit will also emphasise the values of multilateralism in addressing the challenges faced by NAM members in dealing with the pandemic.

 

At the NAM Online Summit, YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is scheduled to deliver a statement that will highlight the strategy that Malaysia has put in place in addressing the unprecedented impacts of COVID-19 in the country. YAB Prime Minister is also expected to underscore the importance of unity within the Movement to inhibit the spread of the virus and defeat the pandemic.

 

The Summit will be participated by NAM member states at the level of Heads of State and Government, which would be known as the NAM Contact Group, whom aspire to advocate solidarity against the pandemic. Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, President of the 74th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly; Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO); and Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, will also participate in the Summit. In addition, Mr. António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General is expected to take part in the Summit via a pre-recorded message.

 

The Summit is expected to adopt a Declaration as a unified voice of the Movement to call for intensified international cooperation in combatting the pandemic. The Declaration will then endorse the establishment of a NAM Task Force to identify social and humanitarian requirements of NAM Member States in their fight against COVID-19.
