COMMONWEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT AFFAIRS OF THE UNITED KINGDOM
On 25 February 2021, YB Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Foreign Minister of Malaysia had a phone conversation with his UK counterpart, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab. Both ministers had an in-depth discussion on bilateral cooperation, as well as regional and international issues.
YB Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin and Foreign Secretary Raab agreed to undertake further concrete steps towards elevation of the already excellent state of Malaysia-UK relations post-BREXIT.
Both Ministers will be looking into specific COVID-19 cooperation since both Malaysia and the UK have rolled out the vaccination plans. This includes reciprocal vaccination arrangement for both nationals covering diplomats, students and expatriates, reciprocal travel bubble, and guaranteed access to UK manufactured vaccines for Malaysia.
Considering UK’s existing substantive linkages and prospective contributions to ASEAN Community-building, YB Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin reiterated Malaysia’s strong support for the UK’s application for ASEAN’s Dialogue Partnership.
Both ministers also exchanged views on the situation in Myanmar, and Foreign Secretary Raab expressed his support for the initiative by Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei to convene an informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting next week.
On the hosting of UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) this year by the UK, both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement on climate change. YB Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin stated that Malaysia’s forest reserve is currently at 55.3 percent or 18.3 million hectares of our total land area, exceeding Malaysia’s initial commitment at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.
Moving forward, both ministers agreed that it is imperative to resume face-to-face discussions and intensify cooperation in the post-COVID-19 era. YB Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin welcomed Foreign Secretary Raab to undertake a visit to Malaysia this year to maintain continuous engagement and further strengthen the long-standing relations between Malaysia and the UK.
