TO THE 73RD SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia, will lead Malaysia’s delegation to the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (73rd UNGA) in New York, United States of America, from 25 to 29 September 2018.
YAB Prime Minister will be accompanied by his spouse YABhg Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Hj Mohd Ali; Minister of Foreign Affairs YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah; Minister of Defence YB Tuan Haji Mohamad Sabu; Minister of Health YB Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad; Menteri Besar Kedah, YAB Dato’ Seri Hj. Mukhriz Tun Mahathir; and senior government officials.
This is the first appearance by YAB Tun Dr Mahathir at the United Nations General Assembly as the 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia, representing a new Government with fresh mandates and aspirations. The last time YAB Prime Minister addressed the United Nations General Assembly was during its 58th Session in 2003.
YAB Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver Malaysia’s national statement at the General Debate on 28 September 2018. The theme for this year’s General Debate, “Making the United Nations Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies” focuses on the continuing relevance of the United Nations system. This invariably gives emphasis on the collective commitments made by world leaders to address the challenges of peace, equity and sustainability.
YAB Prime Minister’s address at the 73rd UNGA will showcase the new Malaysia as a mature democracy that upholds the primacy of the rule of law. YAB Prime Minister will outline Malaysia’s commitments in working with other UN Member States in achieving the objectives under the theme of the 73rd General Debate and beyond. He will also underscore Malaysia’s expectations of the United Nations as the principal international organisation mandated to maintain international peace and security.
YAB Prime Minister is also scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the “Achieving SDGs: Unleashing the Potential of Islamic Finance” event at the UN on 27 September 2018, jointly organised by the Securities Commission of Malaysia, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
Other notable events that involve YAB Prime Minister includes a dialogue with the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations, a panel discussion in the Bloomberg Global Business Forum, as well as an address at the Asia Society. YAB Prime Minister is slated to be interviewed by the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and TRT World. He is expected to meet with renowned entrepreneurs as well as potential investors from the United States during his visit and will host a dinner for the Malaysian diaspora in New York.
Additionally, YAB Prime Minister is scheduled to have bilateral meetings with his counterparts on the side-lines of the 73rd UNGA, to discuss matters of mutual interest. Such meetings are expected to strengthen our bilateral relations with other countries and enhance understanding among world leaders on pertinent regional and global issues.
The accompanying Ministers will have their own separate programmes during the 73rd UNGA. Minister of Foreign Affairs YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah is scheduled to represent Malaysia and deliver statements at several meetings and events such as the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit; the High-Level Ministerial Event on Mediation; and the Ministerial Meeting of the UN Alliance of Civilisations. He will also attend several ministerial-level meetings related to ASEAN; the Commonwealth; the Non-Aligned Movement; the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation; and the Group of 77; as well as other events held on the side-lines of the 73rd UNGA.
YB Minister of Foreign Affairs will also be holding several bilateral meetings with his counterparts to discuss bilateral issues as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.
Minister of Defence YB Tuan Haji Mohamad Sabu is scheduled to attend the High-Level Event on Action for Peacekeeping, while Minister of Health YB Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad is scheduled to attend the High-Level Meeting on the Fight against Tuberculosis and the High-Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. Menteri Besar Kedah, YAB Dato’ Seri Hj. Mukhriz Tun Mahathir will be meeting with potential investors and influential business leaders to explore new business opportunities for Kedah during his visit to New York.
