STATE VISIT BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY,
HIS EXCELLENCY FRANK-WALTER STEINMEIER TO MALAYSIA

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier and First Lady, Her Excellency Elke Büdenbender will undertake a State Visit to Malaysia from 16 to 18 February 2023. President Steinmeier will be accompanied by senior officials, businessmen and media personnel. The visit is part of the ongoing effort to strengthen the existing close ties between Malaysia and Germany. The last State Visit by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany was held 26 years ago, in April 1997.
President Steinmeier will be received by His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda the Yang di- Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah in a State Welcoming Ceremony at the Parliament of Malaysia on 17 February 2023.
Following the ceremony, President Steinmeier is expected to receive a Courtesy Call from the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, at Putrajaya. Both leaders are expected to discuss various bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest.
Subsequently, President Steinmeier is scheduled to have an audience with His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara, followed by a State Banquet in honour of President Steinmeier and his delegation. During the visit, President Steinmeier and his delegation is also expected to undertake a visit to Penang and Sarawak.
The visit by President Steinmeier will provide an excellent opportunity for Malaysia and Germany to further strengthen the longstanding relations and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries. This State Visit is expected to further reinvigorate Kuala Lumpur-Berlin ties and lay the foundation to elevate the relationship to greater heights.
Germany is Malaysia’s largest trading partner from the European Union (EU). In 2022, Malaysia’s total trade with Germany increased by 10.9% amounting to RM59.87 billion (USD13.62 billion) compared to RM53.99 billion (USD13.03 billion) in 2021.
