TELEPHONE CONVERSATION BETWEEN HONOURABLE DATO’ SERI HISHAMMUDDIN TUN HUSSEIN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS MALAYSIA AND HIS EXCELLENCY DINESH GUNAWARDENA MINISTER OF FOREIGN RELATIONS SRI LANKA

 

Honourable Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia held a telephone conversation with his Sri Lankan counterpart, H.E. Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Foreign Relations of Sri Lanka on 13 April 2020 at 1215 hours. This was their second telephone discussion in a month’s period. At the request of his Sri Lankan counterpart, both Ministers had their first telephone conversation on 25 March 2020, where the former extended his congratulations to Honourable Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein on his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia.

 

Both Ministers discussed on the bilateral ties and close cooperation between Malaysia and Sri Lanka followed by exchanged views on COVID-19 pandemic. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia extended his gratitude to the Government of Sri Lanka in giving permission to Malindo Air rescue flight to land in Colombo to repatriate eighty-one stranded Malaysians from Sri Lanka, scheduled on 14 April 2020. In his response, the Minister of Foreign Relations of Sri Lanka conveyed his appreciation to the Government of Malaysia for allowing the same rescue flight to transport two (2) medical kits to Sri Lanka which was purchased by the Government of Sri Lanka.

 

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia stated that the immediate action by the Government of Sri Lanka in rendering the assistance was a testament to the warm and close ties between the two countries. Before the call ended, both Ministers reiterated their commitment to foster closer bilateral relations and cooperation between Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
