UPDATES SPECIAL ASEAN-CHINA FOREIGN MINISTERS’ MEETING AND WORKING VISITS TO EGYPT, KUWAIT, AND QATAR 6 JUNE 2021

UPDATES: SPECIAL ASEAN-CHINA FOREIGN MINISTERS’ MEETING AND WORKING VISITS TO EGYPT, KUWAIT, AND QATAR

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs refers to our Press Release of 5 June 2021 concerning the attendance of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, at the Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Chongqing, the People’s Republic of China on 7 June 2021, as well as working visits to Egypt, Kuwait and Qatar.

It is with deep regret that the Ministry is providing this update that the Foreign Minister is no longer in a position to proceed with the visits to Chongqing, Cairo, Kuwait City and Doha as scheduled. This is due to the fact that, based on the prevailing health regulations and standard operating procedures (SOP), the Foreign Minister has been deemed a close contact by the Ministry of Health (MOH) to a person who has been found positive after a COVID-19 PCR test.

Although the Foreign Minister has undergone two (2) PCR tests which have been found negative – under guidelines prescribed by MOH, the Foreign Minister is required to undergo compulsory quarantine and self-isolation.

Given this unavoidable circumstance, the Foreign Minister will be represented by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar, as Head of the Malaysia’s delegation to the scheduled Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Chongqing. Consequently also, the Foreign Minister has postponed his working visits to Egypt, Kuwait and Qatar to a new set of dates to be determined in consultations with the governments of these countries. The Ministry is working closely with our counterparts in Egypt, Kuwait and Qatar for this purpose.
