Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, will lead the Malaysian delegation to the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit from 25 to 26 November 2019 in Busan, Republic of Korea (ROK).

YAB Prime Minister will be accompanied by his spouse, YABhg. With the slogan “Partnership for Peace, Prosperity for People”, the Summit commemorates the 30th anniversary of ASEAN-ROK dialogue relations. This is the third time ROK hosts a commemorative summit, having hosted the previous summits in Jeju in 2009 and in Busan in 2014.

This year’s Commemorative Summit will provide the Leaders with the opportunity to review the last 30 years of ASEAN-ROK dialogue relations and discuss the future direction of cooperation in the political-security, economic and socio-cultural fields. The Leaders will also discuss the current efforts to enhance connectivity to contribute to the shared prosperity and sustainability of ASEAN and ROK. A Leaders lunch retreat will also be held for leaders to exchange views on the ways to advance peace on the Korean Peninsula and strengthen cooperation through ASEAN-led mechanisms.

YAB Prime Minister will also participate in a dialogue session organised by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on “New Partnership for the Co-Prosperity of Korea and ASEAN Businesses” at the ASEAN-ROK CEO Summit, a side event that focuses on promoting regional business cooperation among entrepreneurs from ASEAN and ROK.

Subsequent to the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit, YAB Prime Minister and spouse will undertake an Official Visit to Seoul, ROK from 27 to 28 November 2019. The visit is YAB Prime Minister’s first official visit to the ROK since assuming the post as the 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia in May 2018.

YAB Prime Minister will be accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah; Minister of Communication and Multimedia, YB Tuan Gobind Singh Deo; Minister of Health, YB Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad; Minister of Water, Land and Natural Resources, YB Dr. Xavier Jayakumar Arulanandam; Minister of International Trade and Industry, YB Datuk Ignatius Darell Leiking, and senior government officials.

During the visit, YAB Prime Minister will lead the Malaysian delegation for a bilateral meeting with HE Moon Jae-in, President of ROK on 28 November 2019. Both leaders will also be witnessing the signing of four Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries in the fields of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Digital Government, Healthcare and Medical Science, as well as on Water and Sewerage Management. This will be followed by a luncheon hosted by President Moon Jae-in in honour of YAB Prime Minister and delegation at the Presidential Blue House.

Apart from the bilateral meeting, YAB Prime Minister will also be attending a roundtable business meeting with the captain of industries of the ROK, and a dinner with the Malaysian diaspora in Seoul.

In 2018, bilateral trade between Malaysia and the ROK recorded an increase of 7.2 percent to USD17.98 billion (RM72.60 billion), as compared to USD15.76 billion (RM67.71 billion) in 2017. The ROK stood as Malaysia’s 8th largest trading partner and the 13th largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2018. Malaysia, on the other hand, was the ROK’s 14th largest trading partner in the corresponding period.

The official visit will further deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between Malaysia and the ROK and set a phase for the elevation of bilateral ties in year 2020, in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
