Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undertake a working visit to the United Kingdom (UK) from 14 to 19 January 2025, following his participation at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the United Arab Emirates. This visit, at the invitation of his counterpart, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, marks the Prime Minister’s first visit to the UK since taking office in November 2022. He will be accompanied by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Aziz; Minister of Higher Education Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir; and Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

During the visit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Starmer on 15 January 2025 to review the progress of Malaysia-UK bilateral relations, and discuss efforts to strengthen collaboration in trade and investment, higher education, climate change and renewable energy, agricommodity and tourism, among others. Both Prime Ministers are also expected to touch on regional and international issues and exchange views on ASEAN-UK Dialogue Relations. As ASEAN Chair for 2025, the Prime Minister will highlight Malaysia’s priorities and ASEAN’s efforts in addressing regional and global challenges.

The Prime Minister’s programme during the working visit includes a meeting with Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle, delivering a keynote address at InvestMalaysia and Fireside Talk, and hosting a roundtable and one-on-one business sessions with industry leaders. Additionally, the Memorandum of Understanding on the Malaysia-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee and other Supporting Mechanisms (MUKJETCO) will be signed during the visit.

The Prime Minister’s working visit to the UK underscores the strong ties between both countries and provides an opportunity for both nations to enhance bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit. Total exports were recorded at RM7.83 billion (USD1.71 billion), while total imports stood at RM7.47 billion (USD1.63 billion) compared to the corresponding period in 2023.
