HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

SUNDAY, 10 DECEMBER 2017

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) 1948.

As a member of the United Nations, Malaysia subscribes to the philosophy, concepts and norms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) of 1948 which sets out the minimum and common standard of human rights for all peoples in all nations.

It is important to assure that human rights concerns are addressed through constructive dialogue-based approach that respects the principles of sovereignty and non-interference.

In line with this year’s commemoration of Human Rights Day and the theme “Mainstreaming Human Rights, Moderation and Inclusiveness for Unity, Peace and Harmony”, Malaysia believes that moderation, mutual respect and understanding are important values that play a crucial role in creating a peaceful environment and fostering goodwill among the diverse ethnic groups of different faiths and cultures in the country.

The Government has also adopted the ‘1Malaysia’ approach to further strengthen the unity among Malaysians, aimed at preserving and enhancing unity in diversity which is Malaysia’s strength and best hope for the future.

To that end, Malaysia will continue to champion the promotion of moderation in bridging differences and resolving disputes as well as to counter violent extremism and radicalisation within the country and in the international fora as we continue to uphold the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
