THE STATUS OF JERUSALEM
Malaysia is extremely concerned that the United States has announced its decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Such a decision would jeopardize all efforts made towards finding a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the Palestinian question. It has grave repercussions not only towards the security and stability of the region, but also inflame Muslim sentiments worldwide, hence making efforts to address violence extremism and radicalize narrative all the more difficult.
Malaysia reaffirms that the issue of Jerusalem is at the core of the Palestinian cause and request that all Member States of the United Nations not to recognise any illegitimate changes in the pre-1967 borders.
Any attempts to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, establishing or transferring any diplomatic mission to the city, are considered an act of aggression not only against the Arab and Islamic Ummah, but is a blatant infringement on the rights of Muslims and Christians alike.
It is also an infringement on the Palestinian people’s national rights, including their right to self-determination, and a grave breach of the international law along with the Security Council’s relevant resolutions: namely Resolutions No. 252 (1968), 267 (1969), 465, 476 and 478 (1980), including the recent Resolution 2334 (2016).
Recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, ignores the reality on the ground, endorses Israel repressive policies, violates Palestinian human rights and contravenes international law. It is a miscarriage of justice.
For these reasons, Malaysia urges the United States to reconsider its decision.
