OFFICIAL VISIT OF THE PRIME MINISTER TO THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA 24-26 NOVEMBER 2024

 

Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undertake an Official Visit to the Republic of Korea from 24 to 26 November 2024, at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Korea Yoon Suk Yeol. The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Haji Hasan; Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Aziz; Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Li Kang; Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang; and senior government officials. This visit is the Prime Minister’s first official visit to the Republic of Korea since assuming office in November 2022.

The Prime Minister will hold a bilateral meeting with President Yoon at the Yongsan Presidential Office. Both leaders will take stock of Malaysia-Republic of Korea bilateral relations that have significantly progressed, both in scope and substance, since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1960. They are also expected to discuss regional and international issues of mutual concern, and exchange views on Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN and the Republic of Korea’s Chairmanship of APEC, both in 2025.

Both leaders will also witness the exchange of three Memoranda of Understanding on:

• Cooperation in the Field of Higher Education

• Cooperation in the Field of Carbon Capture and Storage

• Cooperation in Cooperative Approaches Under Article 6, Paragraph 2 of the Paris Agreement

The Prime Minister is scheduled to attend the Malaysia-Republic of Korea Business Forum and meet with captains of industry from major Korean companies. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to deliver a special address titled “Strategic Partners in a Complex World: Malaysia, Korea, and the Future of Asia” at Seoul National University.

From January to September 2024, Malaysia's trade with the Republic of Korea was valued at RM81.61 billion (USD17.63 billion). From 1980 to June 2024, a total of 392 manufacturing projects with Korean participation have been implemented with total investment worth RM43.10 billion (USD11.50 billion). In 2023, the Republic of Korea was Malaysia’s 8th largest trading partner with a value amounting to RM111.07 billion (USD24.35 billion). Malaysia was the Republic of Korea’s third largest trading partner among ASEAN Member States and 12th largest globally.

The Official Visit is expected to further strengthen the existing bilateral relations between Malaysia and the Republic of Korea. Both countries will be celebrating the 65 th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2025.
