WORKING VISIT OF HONOURABLE DATO’ SAIFUDDIN ABDULLAH,

The Honourable Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister Foreign Affairs of Malaysia will undertake a Working Visit to Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam on 15-17 October 2019. The Honourable Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah will be accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as officers from other related Ministries and agencies.

 

The Honourable Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah will also meet his counterpart, Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan, Minister of Foreign Affairs II of  Brunei Darussalam to follow up on bilateral issues and cooperation which have been discussed by the leaders of both countries during the 22nd Annual Leaders’ Consultation on 5 March 2019 in Putrajaya.

 

In conjunction with the visit, Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah is scheduled to have an audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzadin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam.

 

As closest neighbours and partners in ASEAN, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam have a multifaceted cooperation that mutually benefits both countries.

I extend my heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of Japan, especially those who have lost loved ones and have been affected by Typhoon Hagibis in the Kanto and Tokai regions on 12 October 2019.

 

Malaysia stands in solidarity with Japan during this trying time.

 

I am confident that the ongoing disaster-relief works on the ground would facilitate a speedy recovery of the affected areas.

BUDGET 2020: WISMA PUTRA ALLOCATED WITH RM 0.818 BILLION

 

Wisma Putra welcomes the Budget 2020 as tabled by the YB Minister of Finance on 11 October 2019. The Ministry believes that this budget will pave the way to achieve the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030.

 

Wisma Putra received RM817,775,000 for 2020 as compared to RM788,805,100 in 2019, an increase of RM28,969,900 (3.67%). Out of the total budget for 2020, Operating Expenditure in 2020 sees an increase of 7.76% as compared to the approved allocation in 2019. While the Development Expenditure allocation in 2020 sees a decrease by 19.92% as compared to 2019.

 

Wisma Putra wishes to express its gratitude to the Ministry of Finance for the increased allocation on the Ministry's core business, upgrading of facilities and infrastructures as well as welfare of officers.

 

It is imperative to ensure active participation of the Ministry’s officials in meetings/official visits abroad, presentation of credentials to concurrently accredited countries by Heads of Mission, outreach and public diplomacy programmes, consular visits abroad, etc. In addition, the main focus is to ensure the effectiveness of service delivery through upgrading of infrastructures including procurement of assets and ICT equipment as well as maintenance of government’s properties abroad. The allocation is also expected to be used for the welfare and career development of officers through appropriate trainings including higher education opportunities.

 

The increment will enable Wisma Putra to enhance its roles and responsibilities in defending national interests, increasing Malaysia's involvement in international fora through active participation in international and regional organisations. These engagements are in line with the Foreign Policy Framework of the New Malaysia and its accompanying Plan of Action.

TYPHOON HAGIBIS EXPECTED TO HIT NORTHEAST OF JAPAN

ON SATURDAY, 12 OCTOBER 2019

 

 

A powerful typhoon known as 'Hagibis' is expected to hit Tokai or Kanto regions of Japan on Saturday evening, 12 October 2019.

 

The storm is expected to cause heavy rains, strong winds and high tides with potential risks of natural disasters.

 

The Japanese authorities have advised the public in the path of the typhoon to make preparations and take every possible measure to ensure safety.

 

The public transportation services and flights in the affected areas are also expected to be cancelled or suspended.

 

Malaysians residing in Japan are advised to remain indoor, stay alert and closely monitor the weather updates and public safety announcements.

 

Meanwhile, for those intending to travel to Japan, please check the latest weather forecast, flight schedule and plan your visit beforehand.

CONSULTATIVE COUNCIL ON FOREIGN POLICY MEETING

 

The Consultative Council on Foreign Policy convened its 2nd Meeting today after it was first established by the Cabinet on 10 October 2018. The Meeting was chaired by YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs. In its Meeting, the Council appointed four new members, namely, YBhg. Dato’ Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob (Secretary-General for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), YBhg. Dato’ Amran Mohamed Zin (Deputy Secretary-General for Bilateral Affairs), YBhg. Dato’ Nadzirah Osman (Deputy Secretary-General for Multilateral Affairs) and YBhg. Dato’ Hsu King Bee (former Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and Permanent Representative to ASEAN, Jakarta).

 

The establishment of the Council is a clear manifestation of the Government’s commitments to enhance cooperation with civil societies as the main stakeholder, especially in formulating a more transparent, open and inclusive foreign policy.

 

The two main agenda discussed at the Meeting are:

 

  1. The Plan of Action in implementing the essence of the Foreign Policy Framework of the New Malaysia which was officially launched by YAB Prime Minister on 18 September 2019; and

 

  1. 75th Anniversary of the United Nations (UN@75) and the issues that Malaysia would promote at the United Nations in 2020.

 

 

The Council in principal endorsed the Plan of Action which itemised the work plan as well as the priorities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in line with the commitments pronounced in the Foreign Policy Framework of the New Malaysia. The Council also agreed for the Plan of Action to form the basis in formulating the Ministry’s Strategic Plan 2021-2025.

 

On the second agenda item, the Council also agreed in principal on the issues to be prioritised by Malaysia at the United Nations in 2020, namely, the strengthening of multilateralism, notably, within the context of United Nations Security Council reform. The UN@75 celebration would carry the theme “The Future We Want, the UN We Need: Reaffirming Our Collective Commitment to Multilateralism”. In addition to the above, Malaysia would also participate in other programmes such as Beijing+25 Summit, NPT Review Conference 2020 and UN2020 Initiative.
