the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the
Kingdom of Bahrain and Malaysia, 2024
This year, the Kingdom of Bahrain and Malaysia celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two brotherly countries, and recognize
the outstanding progress and development taking place across a range of political,economic, cultural and social fields under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa,
King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
On this occasion, the Kingdom of Bahrain and Malaysia are proud of the longstanding relations and strong partnership between their leaderships and the peoples, and their continued
development on the basis of trust, mutual respect, human values and common interests. These ties gained further positive momentum with the inauguration of the Malaysian Embassy
in Manama on 16 September 2003, the establishment of the Bahraini Embassy in Kuala Lumpur on 15 November 2017, the formation of the High Joint Committee for Bilateral
Cooperation in 2001, and its formal meeting under the chairmanship of the Foreign Ministers of the two countries in 2013.
The relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and Malaysia are today stronger than ever, marked by high-level exchanges of visits between the leaders of both countries, which have
further deepened the bonds of bilateral brotherhood and friendship. The special visit of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Malaysia on 20 July 2024 to attend the installation
of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim as the 17th King of Malaysia, highlights the significance of these ties, which continue to evolve through ongoing official, parliamentary, and economic
engagements.
The two countries continue to strengthen their cooperation through the implementation of signed agreements and memoranda of understanding for economic, trade, investment,technical,
cultural and scientific cooperation. Further, they continue to advance their shared aspiration for deeper partnerships in energy, Islamic banking and finance, manufacturing,transport,
halal products manufacturing, food security, logistics hub, information and communications technology, tourism, culture and education, environment and renewable energy, among many others.
The Kingdom of Bahrain and Malaysia are committed to strengthening international multilateral cooperation through their active roles in international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The relations between Malaysia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have also been significantly enhanced, both bilaterally and through ASEAN. In June 2009, the Kingdom of Bahrain hosted the first Ministerial Meeting of the Gulf Strategic Dialogue with ASEAN, and in January 2011,Malaysia signed the Framework Agreement for Economic, Trade, Investment, and Technical Cooperation with the GCC states. In November 2019, Bahrain became the first Gulf state to accede to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia and its amended protocols.
Additionally, both countries participated in and supported the outcomes of the historic inaugural ASEAN-GCC Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 20 October 2023. These developments reflect the deepening cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain,Malaysia, and the broader GCC and ASEAN regions.
This fiftieth anniversary of diplomatic relations marks a historic milestone for the Kingdom of Bahrain and Malaysia, providing an opportunity to reaffirm their shared pride in the growth
of their close political, economic, and cooperative partnership. Both countries are determined to further expand these ties to bring greater prosperity to their peoples and to strengthen their pivotal role in promoting security, peace, and sustainable development, at both regional and international levels.
Moving forward, the Kingdom of Bahrain and Malaysia are committed to deepening their bilateral cooperation across all areas of mutual interest. Both countries will continue to leverage existing platforms, such as the High Joint Committee for Bilateral Cooperation, to discuss and strengthen their collaboration, as well as to explore new opportunities, promote innovation, and address emerging global challenges. Together, the Kingdom of Bahrain and Malaysia aim to build a more prosperous and resilient future, contributing to the stability and development of their two countries and the wider regions, looking forward to many further years of close and effective cooperation.
