STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON THE SUDDEN DEMISE OF FORMER PRESIDENT MOHAMED MORSI DURING COURT APPEARANCE IN CAIRO ON 17 JUNE 2019

STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON THE SUDDEN DEMISE OF FORMER PRESIDENT MOHAMED MORSI DURING COURT APPEARANCE IN CAIRO ON 17 JUNE 2019

I am shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Mohamed Morsi, former President of Egypt after collapsing in court on 17 June 2019.

Mr. Morsi was the first democratically-elected President of Egypt following the 2011 Arab Spring revolution, whose term was abruptly ended after 12 months. During his tenure as President, Mr. Morsi showed courage and moral fortitude in his attempt to lead Egypt away from decades of authoritarian rule and establish true democracy there.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family of Mr. Morsi and the people of Egypt. Mr. Morsi’s contribution to justice and democracy in Egypt will be remembered.  May Allah bless his soul and grant him Jannah.
