SPEECH
BY Y.B. DATO’ SERI UTAMA HAJI MOHAMAD BIN HAJI HASAN
MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, MALAYSIA
THE LAUNCHING CEREMONY OF THE LOGO AND THEME OF THE ASEAN-MALAYSIA CHAIRMANSHIP 2025
TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN HALL, WP1, WISMA PUTRA 22 OCTOBER 2024
YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industries
YB Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture
YB Dato’ Mohamad Alamin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs
Secretaries-General of Wisma Putra, MITI and MOTAC,
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
1.Assalamualaikum warahmatullahiwabarakatuh, salam sejahtera, and a very good afternoon.
2.It is a significant occasion that brings us together on this day.
3.Today brings us another step closer towards the beginning of an important new role for our country.
4.The gears are already in motion for Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN next year. It is therefore with great joy that we launch the logo and theme of the ASEAN-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025.
5.We have already seen the official handover of the Chairmanship, which took place on 11th October, at the conclusion of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Laos.
6.The logo and the theme for Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship were officially unveiled by Yang Amat Berhormat Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim
7.Before we go any further, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Government and the people of Laos for a successful and highly inspiring year in steering ASEAN forward.
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
8.Malaysia is deeply honoured, and stands ready to assume this pivotal responsibility.
9.Allow me to share with you a snapshot of our main priorities next year.
10. Firstly, we will aim to fortify ASEAN centrality.
11. Malaysia will promote strategic trust among nations through sustained dialogues, diplomacy and goodwill. Working together with Member States, Malaysia seeks to expand our economic partnerships with those beyond our borders.
12. The convening of the ASEAN-GCC plus China Summit in Kuala Lumpur in 2025 is indeed a testament to ASEAN’s intent of collaborating with the wider global community.
13. Secondly, Malaysia will continue to push for greater commitment to enhance ASEAN intra-trade and investment.
14. We will also ensure that ASEAN will be able to leverage on advances in sciences, technology and innovation, and harness the benefits of digital transformation and new technologies.
15. Thirdly, Malaysia will ensure that the elements of inclusivity, and sustainability, which is the theme for 2025, take centre stage in our regional Communitybuilding efforts.
16. This will entail greater efforts at narrowing the development gap, improving living standards while mitigating the impacts of climate change.
17. Having been premised on Malaysia’s MADANI framework, ‘Inclusivity’ and ‘Sustainability’ are interdependent, and mutually reinforcing values.
18. Malaysia will ensure that these values are advanced, and embedded across all spectrums of ASEAN cooperation, during our Chairmanship.
19. We believe that the pursuit of these aspirations is ESSENTIAL to the region’s growth and resilience.
Excellencies,
20. In 2025, ASEAN will be commemorating the 10th anniversary of the formal establishment of the ASEAN Community.
21. Building from this achievement, we have plans to adopt the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, a framework that will chart our strategic direction for the next 20 years.
22. I have always believed that, as a community, we have not only withstood, but prevailed, over many of our shared obstacles together through the decades. We have achieved this the ASEAN way.
23. ASEAN’s nuanced and pragmatic approach to managing geopolitical competition between major powers is increasingly seen as a model for the rest of the developing world.
24. ASEAN’s commitment to neutrality, dialogue, and regional cooperation, has kept Southeast Asia stable amid external rivalries.
25. For instance, ASEAN’s trade with China recorded 696.7 billion US Dollars in 2023, reflecting China’s position as our largest trading partner since 2009. At the same time, trade with the United States amounted to 395.9 billion US Dollars.
26. Such diplomatic balance has also led to strong growth in foreign direct investments for ASEAN. Last year, we successfully attracted a total of 229.8 billion US Dollars in FDI, with China and the United States ranking as major contributors.
27. This influx of investments has been pivotal in driving job creation, technology transfer, and infrastructure development across the region.
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
28. Once again, I wish to reiterate that Malaysia is fully committed to our role and responsibility as the next ASEAN Chair.
29. We count on the support and cooperation from all of our friends and partners, in ensuring a successful year ahead.
30. Our vision of ASEAN will remain immutable. It will continue to reflect the hopes of our peoples, for a peaceful, stable and prosperous region that is ready to contribute positively to global affairs.
31. With that, dengan lafaz Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, I officially launch the logo and the theme for Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025.
Thank you.
