MALAYSIA’S COMMONWEALTH YOUTH CONTINGENT LEFT INDIA WITH 3 GOLD, 4 SILVER AND 6 BRONZE MEDALS
The Malaysian contingent participating in the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games from 12th to 18th October 2008 left India via Mumbai on 19 October 2008 and brought with them 3 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals they won.
Two gold medals were won in weightlifting each in 62kg and 69kg categories. Another gold medal was won in the men’s double category of badminton. Shooting contributed 3 silver and 2 bronze medals to Malaysia while one bronze medal was won in athletics.
The Youth Commonwealth Games, held in Pune Maharashtra, came to o a close on 18 October 2006 and witness the host country India won a total of 76 medals, followed by Australia and England winning 65 and 41 medals respectively. Malaysia was at the seventh place with a total of 13 medals.
The Games was closed in a colourful ceremony by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Hon. Vilasrao Deshmukh. H.E. Dato' Tan Seng Sung, the Malaysian High Commissioner and Tourism Malaysia Director, P. Manoharan attended the closing ceremony. The contingent was sent at Mumbai Airport of by the Vice Consul, Othman Abdullah.
