Courtesy Meeting by Malaysian Delegation Participating in the Japan – US FIRST Program

21 November 2025 – The Embassy welcomed the Malaysian delegation, participating in the Japan – US Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Technologies (FIRST) – Japan Initiative Program.  The program was held from 17 to 21 November 2025, as a collaborative effort between Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the US Department of State. The Malaysian delegation consists of representatives from various ministries, semi-governmental bodies and other relevant organisations, including the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Energy Commission, MyPower Corp., Tenaga National Berhad (TNB) and PETRONAS.

The objectives of the program with Malaysia are to support capacity building for the responsible use of SMR technology, assist in meeting energy and climate goals, and facilitate the development of nuclear energy programs under the highest international standards of safety, security, and non-proliferation. During the meeting, the Malaysian delegation shared their perspectives and key observations regarding their visit to Tsuruga Nuclear Power Plant and several other nuclear facilities in Fukui Prefecture, as Malaysia is actively exploring SMR technology as a potential addition to its energy mix to meet climate goals.
