The Secretary of State of the United States of America, His Excellency Rex Tillerson, will undertake a working visit to Malaysia from 8 to 9 August 2017. This is his first visit to Malaysia since his appointment as the U.S. Secretary of State on 1 February 2017.
During the visit, Secretary Tillerson will also call on Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, on 8 August 2017 and meet Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, on 9 August 2017.
Malaysia and the United States of America enjoy excellent relations with substantial collaboration and cooperation in many areas. The United States of America was Malaysia’s third largest trading partner in 2016. For the period of January to May 2017, total bilateral trade grew 23.3% amounting to RM68.2 billion (USD$15.4 billion) as compared with RM55.3 billion (USD$13.5 billion) during the corresponding period in 2016.
The working visit of the Secretary of State is an affirmation of the commitment by the United States of America under President Trump’s administration to further strengthen bilateral ties with Malaysia. The visit will provide the opportunity for both Malaysia and the United States of America to discuss and exchange views on a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest.
