MARRIAGE REGISTRATION FOR MALAYSIANS IN NEW ZEALAND 

The following items must be submitted:

  1. Application form – BORANG PENDAFTARAN PERKAHWINAN.  Please print clearly in BLOCK LETTERS – use BLACK or BLUE pen.  Note: To request an application Form: Kindly send self address paid envelope to the High Commission (attn: Consular Section).  Application form will be sent upon receiving your prepaid envelope.
  2. BORANG LAMPIRAN D – 2 copies.  To be signed by both Bride/Bridegroom and witnessed by two persons (2nd section).
  3. Photographs (32 x 38mm) to be pasted to BORANG PENDAFTARAN PERKAHWINAN.
  4. New Zealand Marriage Certificate – Original and Photocopy.
  5. Malaysian Identity Card or others (bride/bridegroom) – Original and Photocopy (both sides).
  6. Malaysian passport or others (bride/bridegroom) Original and Photocopy. Details of passport pages only.
  7. Fee of NZ$10.00(as of Sept.2011) in BANK CHEQUE, payable to High Commission of Malaysia.  PERSONAL CHEQUES or CASH not accepted.
  8. Please make an appointment and couples wishing to register their marriage must be present at the High Commission of Malaysia (same day process). Appointment is necessary and kindly call Consular Section Tel: 04-3852439. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (except Public Holiday): 0930 hrs to 1230 hrs and 1430 to 1630 hrs                                                    

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE ISSUED BY THE HIGH COMMISSION MUST BE SIGNED BY BRIDE/BRIDEGROOM AT THE HIGH COMMISSION

N O T E:

-       Where any person who is a citizen of or is domiciled in Malaysia has contracted a marriage abroad, the person has to register such marriage. Akta Membaharui Undang-Undang (Perkahwinan dan Perceraian) (Seksyen 31 dan 33).  A person who applies to register such marriage shall within six months after the date of the marriage fill in this form and appear before the nearest of most conveniently available Registrar abroad, i.e., in New Zealand, (or where before the expiry of six months, either or both parties return to Malaysia and the marriage has not been registered the person shall within six months of arrival in Malaysia fill in this form and appear before any Registrar in Malaysia for the registration of such marriage).  The application must be made to the Registrar of Marriage / Consular Office at the High Commission of Malaysia in Wellington.

-         If a marriage was not registered within six (6) months period, a late registration of marriage will be allowed upon payment of penalty as prescribed under the Regulation, i.e., i) NZ$42.00 – as of Sept.2011 (for the first year of late registration), ii) NZ$21.00 (for each year thereafter).  No penalty if the marriage is registered within the first six months.

-         The Registrar / Consular Officer may disperse with the appearance of one of the parties to the marriage if he / she satisfied that exist a good and sufficient reason for the absence of such party.  A statement of the reason for his or her absence must be given in Borang J (1).
