JOINT STATEMENT FOR

THE 1 ST MALAYSIA-NEW ZEALAND ANNUAL FOREIGN MINISTERS’ MEETING

KUALA LUMPUR, 7 JUNE 2024 

 

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, the Hon. Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, the Rt. Hon. Winston Peters held the 1st Malaysia-New Zealand Annual Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AFMM) on 7 June 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Bilateral Cooperation under the Strategic Partnership

2. The Ministers expressed their appreciation for the strong bilateral relationship and recognised the progress of the current cooperation under the Strategic Partnership established in 2023, encompassing its four (4) pillars: Prosperity; People; Planet; and Peace & Security.

3. Both Ministers reviewed the progress of the ongoing bilateral cooperation and reiterated their commitment to the Strategic Partnership and their determination to enhance and broaden the ongoing collaboration in key areas of strategic importance and mutually beneficial.

Regional and International Issues

4. Both Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the ASEAN-New Zealand Strategic Partnership, including through ASEAN-led mechanisms and looked forward to commemorating the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-New Zealand dialogue relations during Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025.

5. Both sides also exchanged views concerning geostrategic, security and geoeconomics in addressing the regional challenges, including the South China Sea, the situation in the Middle East, and the situations in Myanmar, and Ukraine.

6. The Ministers reiterated their strong commitment to multilateralism and committed to continuing to work together to strengthen multilateral institutions, including their role in protecting and promoting human rights.
