HIGH COMMISSION OF MALAYSIA PARTICIPATES IN 59TH ASEAN DAY CELEBRATION IN ISLAMABAD

On 20 August 2026, the High Commission of Malaysia in Islamabad participated in the celebration of the 59th Anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), organised by the ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI) at the Islamabad Marriott Hotel.

The reception brought together representatives of the Government of Pakistan, the diplomatic corps, international organisations, the private sector, civil society and friends of ASEAN in Pakistan. The event was held under the ASEAN 2026 Chairship theme, “Navigating Our Future, Together,” reflecting ASEAN’s continued commitment to cooperation, friendship and shared prosperity among its Member States and partners.

H.E. Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines and Chair of the ACI, delivered the welcome remarks, highlighting ASEAN’s strength as a diverse regional community founded on peace, dialogue and cooperation. The celebration was graced by H.E. Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture of Pakistan, who conveyed the warm felicitations of the Government and people of Pakistan to ASEAN Member States and highlighted the longstanding engagement between Pakistan and ASEAN.

As part of the celebration, Malaysia joined other ASEAN Missions in showcasing the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Southeast Asia through cultural presentations, country displays and cuisine.

A highlight of Malaysia’s participation was a cultural fashion presentation showcasing the country’s multicultural identity through a selection of traditional attire representing Malaysia’s Malay, Chinese and Indian communities. The showcase culminated with Malaysian traditional wedding attire accompanied by the presentation of bunga telur, a customary decorative gift commonly associated with Malay wedding celebrations.

The colourful presentation provided guests with a glimpse into Malaysia’s diverse cultural traditions and reflected the harmonious coexistence of the various communities that form the country’s social and cultural fabric. It also complemented the broader ASEAN cultural programme, which featured traditional and contemporary performances by ASEAN Missions in Islamabad.

Malaysia also participated in the country booth and ASEAN food showcase, which offered guests an opportunity to learn more about the distinctive traditions, cultural expressions and culinary heritage of ASEAN Member States.

The 59th ASEAN Day celebration provided a platform to further promote ASEAN’s visibility in Pakistan while strengthening people-to-people ties through culture, cuisine, tourism and continued engagement. Malaysia’s participation reaffirmed its commitment to ASEAN solidarity and to promoting greater understanding of the country’s multicultural heritage among friends and partners in Pakistan.
