HANDING OVER CEREMONY OF NASUNOGAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ORMOC CITY, LEYTE ISLAND, PHILIPPINES
During the Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) that hit the country on 8 November 2013, 93 out of 97 schools in Ormoc City were damaged, among which Nasunogan Elementary School was one of it that was severely damaged. However, the school was unable to recover on its own after the typhoon due to the lack of financial support. MERCY Malaysia decided to help in rehabilitating the school with the financial assistance from Maybank Foundation. The construction works which started on 10 April 2014 was completed on 28 November 2014 with a total cost of Php4,518,651.50 (RM377,442.96).
The Malaysian delegation consists of three teams; MERCY Malaysia headed by the Honorable Secretary YM Raja Riza Shazmin, Maybank Foundation headed by the Board of Trustee, Honorable Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir and Embassy of Malaysia, Manila headed by H.E Ambassador Dato’ Mohd Zamri Mohd Kassim went to Ormoc City on 12 May 2015 to witness the handing over ceremony of the school. Some representatives of Maybank Philippines from BGC, Cebu City, Tacloban and Mindanao branches also joined the programme.
The Malaysian delegation received a very warm welcome by the school principal, teachers, students and the people of Nasunogan Barangay. After the official handing over of the school, H.E Ambassador Dato’ Mohd Zamri together with Mr. Shahril Azuar Jimin officiated the computer laboratory, witnessed by Ormoc City Mayor Edward C. Codilla. The delegation also went to the village area to meet with the local people. The Embassy was informed by MERCY Malaysia that besides reconstruction of the school, they also helped in installing street lamps and other basic infrastructure.
