JEDDAH — Consul General of Malaysia Mohd Khalid Abbasi Abdul Razak and his wife Aniza Khalid hosted a Malaysia Day Golden Jubilee celebration Monday at the Chancery here.

Malaysia Day is celebrated every year on September 16 to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian federation on the same date in 1963.

About 350 Malaysians, including professionals, students and families residing in Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah, Yanbu and other parts of the Western Province, under the jurisdiction of the consulate, attended the event.

The event began with the hoisting of "Jalur Gemilang," the national flag of Malaysia, and singing of Malaysia National anthem followed by speech by the Consul General.

Consul General Khalid in his speech called on his fellow Malaysians to appreciate peace, preserve harmony and nurture solidarity with patriotism.

He stated that the theme of the 56th National Day celebration which was celebrated on August 31 "Malaysiaku Berdaulat: Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku (My Sovereign Malaysia: My Native Land)" reflects the government desire for the people to remain united to defend the sovereignty of Malaysia which has gained independence from the clutches of colonialism for decades.

"The uniqueness of having multiracial and multicultural society has made us special and an asset that will help us to achieve the developed nation status with high income in the next few years," he said.

The guests were served with a wide spread of authentic Malay dishes, especially cooked for the occasion.

The Consul General and his wife were happy to witness a good turnout despite the event being held on a working day.
