Establishment of the Embassy of Malaysia in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Historically, Malaysian Mission in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia operated as a Consulate in Jeddah and named as "Federation of Malaya Consulate".  The Consulate was believed to begin its establishment in 1958 through the finding of the Consulate's seal dated 24 August 1958.

There was an effort by the Ministry of External Affairs (Currently, Kementerian Luar Negeri – Wisma Putra) to raise the status of the Consulate to that of an Embassy in 1962. Some documentary evidence showing the effort was a letter written to Tunku Abdul Rahman, on September 1961.

Following the Consulate's Note Verbale to the Royal Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs dated 18 May 1963, the Consulate sent another Note Verbale on 11 July 1963 to the Royal Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeking the latter's concurrence on the time to announce the raising of the Consulate's status to an Embassy to coincide with the appointment of YAM Tunku Jaafar as Ambassador accredited to Jeddah and resident in Cairo.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through its Note Verbale on 19 August 1953 responded to inform the Kingdom's agreement with the Consulate's request on the announcement proposal.

Following that, Federation of Malaya Consulate issued its Note Verbale to all embassies and diplomatic missions in Jeddah informing of its elevation to be an Embassy beginning of 1 September 1963 with Mr. Hanafiah bin Ahmad as the Chargê d' Affaires.

In 1985, the Embassy of Malaysia moved its operation to Riyadh while Malaysian Mission in Jeddah remained and operated as Consulate General on 5 September 1985.  Former Sheraton Hotel in Dabbab St., Riyadh was placed the Embassy's temporary office before moving to the Diplomatic Quarter in 1986.  The then H.E. Datuk Mokhtar bin Ahmad was the first Malaysian Ambassador serving in Riyadh.
