3RD ASIA - MIDDLE EAST DIALOGUE

YB Senator A. Kohilan Pillay, Deputy Foreign Minister of Malaysia led a delegation of 6 members from Malaysia to the recently concluded 3rd Asia - Middle East Dialogue (AMED III) held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre (QSNCC) in Bangkok.
2. Malaysia together with 38 other members of AMED had participated in various discussions on issues of common interest to its members such as regional security, terrorism, global economic, educational and cultural issues to name a few. The meeting, in its Chairman’s Report, members of the meeting, inter alia, agreed to strengthen the existing relations and cooperation including in new areas such as halal and Islamic finance. Mr. Hasnan Zahedi Ahmad Zakaria, Undersecretary from the National Security Council, JPM also presented a paper on Piracy and Maritime Security Cooperation in one of the sessions.
3. YB Senator Kohilan also seized the opportunity to hold a bilateral meeting with his counterpart from Kyrgyz Republic, H.E. Nurlan Aimurzaev. The bilateral meeting which lasted for 20 minutes accorded both leaders with the opportunity to discuss various bilateral issues on bilateral and multilateral fronts. A special interview with BERNAMA’s representative in Bangkok was also arranged on the day YB Senator Kohilan arrived where the latter expounded in great length on cooperation within AMED including the participation of private sector in driving AMED forward. YB Senator Kohilan also commended AMED as an excellent platform for Asia and Middle East to learn and exchange views and ideas for the benefit of the members.
4. In honouring the delegation, Tn. Syed Bakri Syed Abdul Rahman, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy hosted a dinner for the delegation on 14 December 2010.
