A MOMENT WITH HIS LORDSHIP TUN ZAKI TUN AZMI, CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE FEDERAL COURT OF MALAYSIA, 6 MARCH 2011

The Embassy of Malaysia had organised a special session with His Lordship Tun Zaki Tun Azmi who came to Thailand for a meeting in Pattaya on 4 & 5 March 2011. His Lordship Tun Zaki had generously accepted the request made by the Embassy for him to share his sheer knowledge and wealth of experience by updating the officers and staff of the Embassy on the latest developments pertaining to the judicial system.

2.         During the two-hour session, His Lordship Tun Zaki spoke in great length on the achievements made by the Malaysian judiciary for the past two years particularly in clearing thousands of backlog of cases which some had been delayed for many years. The success in clearing the backlog of cases and in revamping the system had earned Malaysian judiciary system the envy from its counterparts such as Singapore, Thailand, Tanzania and Saudi Arabia which in turn were prepared to learn from Malaysia’s experience.

3.         In illustrating his points, His Lordship Tun Zaki conveyed some important basic principles that need to be observed such as the need to conduct physical check to understand the problem,  computerisation and the use of technology in data storage, the establishment of specialised courts to deal with certain specific issues etc. The above goals were all accomplished within a short period of time and at minimal costs. Members of the floor also took the opportunity to ask numerous questions ranging from the alleged biasness, integrity, relationship of the judiciary with other entities and the like in the Q&A session that followed.

4.         Generally, the short briefing session had accorded the Embassy with the rare opportunity to engage in meaningful discussion with a very prominent personality from Malaysia who happened to be in Thailand for a meeting. Such arrangement was also consistent with the aim to bring the Embassy closer to anyone as aspired by the Embassy’s public diplomacy initiative.
