AROUND THE WORLD IN 288 DAYS
CYCLING EXPEDITION BY MALAYSIAN DUO
27 JULY 2010
Two Malaysian cyclists by the name of Mohd. Aswad Zainal and Abdul Khalib Zakaria who were on their mission to cycle around the world made a stop at the Embassy of Malaysia in Bangkok on 27 July 2010 where they were greeted by Dato’ Husni Zai Yaacob and other staff of the Embassy. They had started their mission eleven days earlier where the flagging-off ceremony was done by Dato’ Norhaidi Che Dan, Political Secretary to the Foreign Minister at the compound of Wisma Putra.
2. In welcoming the cyclists to the Embassy, a small reception was held in their honour where the opportunity was seized to enable the staff to learn more about the cycling mission. The Embassy had also offered one of its vacant apartments at the HBS Quarters to the cyclists for them to rest and spend two nights in Bangkok and see a little bit of the City of Angel before they continue with their journey.
3. The mission will take them to many countries in Asia, Europe and America within the targeted time of 288 days. The cyclists will cycle to Thailand, Laos, China, Kyrgyztan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Turkey before they have to cross to Europe which journey will take them to Greece, Italy, France and England. From England, they will fly across the Atlantic Ocean to the USA where they will cycle across the continent to Los Angeles before flying across the Pacific Ocean to Japan. The final leg of their mission will take them to Korea and Eastern China before heading down to Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and eventually Malaysia by April 2011.
4. The mission was the second in the series after it was first accomplished by another duo Malaysian cyclists in 2002 which took them 389 days to cycle around the world. The current mission is initiated within the spirit of Malaysia Boleh and, of course, after very intensive training of seven years!
