The Assumption University in Bangkok had once again invited representatives from the Embassy of Malaysia to deliver a special lecture session to its students from the Department of International Business Management to enable its students to be exposed to views from other sources other than its own lecturers. The Embassy was represented by its Economic officers, namely, Ms. Fary Akmal Osman (MITI), Mr. Jai Shankar (MATRADE) and Ms. Wahida Abdul Rahman (MIDA). Approximately, 60 students and lecturers attended the session.
Various issues including the more recent initiatives by the Government of Malaysia such as the Tenth Malaysia Plan, New Economic Model, Government Transformation Programme and Economic Transformation Programme were explained to the audience. In addition, the different roles undertaken by the various agencies were also highlighted to the audience where collectively they would play a pivotal role in terms of assisting the Malaysian Government in its efforts to transform the country into a developed economy by 2020.
The Q&A session involved wide-range of questions including those that is related to MATRADE’s export promotion services as well as the incentives offered by MIDA. There were also many questions related to ASEAN, specifically on the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) which is due to come into being in 2015. Questions related to the halal sector as well as possibility of the introduction of common currency within ASEAN was also raised.
The Embassy certainly welcomes the above initiative which clearly augurs well with its economic and public diplomacy initiatives. It is hoped that more opportunities will be made available in the future for the Embassy to explain various other issues on Malaysia to interested audiences in Thailand.
