Minister of Tourism Meets with Malaysian Chargé d’Affaires to Expedite Support for Affected Tourists
On 13 August 2025, Mr. Sorawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports, welcomed Mr. Bong Yik Jui, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Malaysia in Thailand, at the Parliament Building to discuss the incident involving two Malaysian tourists who were assaulted in the Ratchadamri area on 7 August. The meeting aimed to urgently identify ways to provide assistance and remedies to the victims.
The Minister expressed his deepest regrets over the incident and reaffirmed that the Thai government prioritizes the safety of all tourists. He has instructed relevant agencies under the Ministry to fully support the victims in accordance with the Ministry’s assistance program for injured or deceased foreign tourists. This includes facilitating all necessary processes for the families of the victims.
The Malaysian Chargé d’Affaires expressed appreciation for the actions taken by the Thai government and emphasized that the Malaysian authorities have instructed local media to report the incident based solely on official Thai information, in order to prevent misunderstandings and preserve the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.
Later in the afternoon, Mr. Sorawong assigned Mr. Jakrapat Klongphayaban, Minister’s Advisor, to visit and offer moral support to the victims’ families, while closely monitoring the medical condition of the injured tourists. This is to ensure timely and comprehensive assistance and to reinforce confidence in Thailand as a safe travel destination.
