PANEL DISCUSSIONS ON STANDARD FOR EDUCATION IN ASEAN ROYAL THAI NAVY CONVENTION HALL,19 AUGUST 2011
In the spirit of ASEAN solidarity and Malaysia’s contribution towards promoting greater awareness on ASEAN, the Embassy of Malaysia together with two other ASEAN Embassies in Bangkok had participated in a panel discussion entitled “Standard for Education of the ASEAN Community” on 19 August 2011. The panel discussion was jointly organised by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) and the Council of University Faculty Senate of Thailand in conjunction with the Annual Academic Conference. The event was held at the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall, Arun-Amarin, Bangkok. It was attended by mostly professors, lecturers and school teachers in Thailand.
2. The Embassy of Malaysia was represented by Ms. Fenny Nuli, Minister Counsellor. Two other ASEAN Embassies, namely, from Indonesia and the Philippines also participated in the session. Thailand was represented by the Deputy Director-General of ASEAN-Thailand, Dr. Soonthorn Chaiyindeepum. The said panel was preceded by the keynote address by the Ambassador of Indonesia to Thailand. The objectives of the panel discussions were actually to raise awareness for every university in Thailand on the diversity that exists within the community as well as to promote greater participation in ASEAN dialogue particularly in the academic area in view of the realisation of the ASEAN Community in 2015.
3. In presenting Malaysia’s perspectives on the subject matter, emphasis was given on the various initiatives that had been done by Malaysia including the importance of internationalisation aspect under the National Higher Education Strategic Plan (NHESP), greater participation in ASEAN University Network (AUN) as well as Malaysia - Indonesia - Thailand Mobility Programme. One of the suggestions made following the discussions was the establishment of an ASEAN corners in every schools in Thailand and other ASEAN Member States. Such suggestion was warmly welcomed by those present.
