PROMOTION OF MALAYSIA BY TOURISM MALAYSIA IN BANGKOK 18 & 19 DECEMBER 2009

The Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board Office in Bangkok had undertaken an elaborate campaign to promote Malaysia among local peoples in Bangkok by organising a two-day event known as Malaysia Youth Tourism Showcase 2009 on 18 & 19 December 2009 at Siam Paragon, a mega shopping complex located in the heart of Bangkok.

2.         Throughout the two-day period, various activities ranging from the promotion of tourism packages by Malaysia Airlines, home-stay programmes, educational tourism in Malaysia etc had been organised by more than 12 participating booths including from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia Airlines, Genting Berhad as well as three home-stay agents. Other than the usual booths, there was also a special traditional music performance performed by a band called Kulintangan brought from Sabah to spice up the ambience and to accord more “Malaysian feeling” to the visitors. In addition to that, there was also a special fashion show displaying the creative collection of Batik by a renowned Malaysian designer Sharifah Kirana Syed Ghazali which managed to attract a lot of attention from the visitors owing to its bold designs and vibrant colours.

3.         Judging from the number of visitors who came to visit the booths and watched the side line performances, as well as from the general feedback given by the visitors, the two-day event could be described as a huge success in promoting Malaysia to the local peoples. Tourists from other countries who happened to be in the area had also flocked the booths and grabbed the various brochures and pamphlets that were put on display.

4.         In concluding the productive year for 2009, the Tourism Office in Bangkok had also organised a Thank You Reception 2009 at Holiday Inn, Silom Road as its way of thanking the main individuals and organisations who and which had supported its activities throughout 2009. Nearly 100 invitees from various travel agencies, members of the local media and officers from the Embassy had graced the reception.

5.         While the general trend of tourism for 2009 was not as encouraging as in 2008 due to various factors, domestically and globally, Tourism Malaysia Office in Bangkok is determined to ensure that it could optimise its roles in promoting Malaysia to the local Thais and tourists in Thailand consistent with the famous tagline of Malaysia Truly Asia.
