PROMOTION OF MALAYSIA BY TOURISM MALAYSIA IN BANGKOK, 24 - 27 FEBRUARY 2011

The Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board Office in Bangkok had participated in a 4-day long Thai International Travel Fair held at the Queen Sirikit Convention Centre (QSCC) in Bangkok with the participation of more than 400 local and foreign travel operators.

2.         Under the banner of Tourism Malaysia, 8 local operators had participated in promoting tourism opportunities in Malaysia where in general places like Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Genting Highlands continued to be the main attractions among local Thais. In participating in this year’s edition, the Tourism Malaysia had chosen the majestic Sultan Abdul Samad building in the heart of Kuala Lumpur as the background for the booth run by Tourism Malaysia at QSCC.

3.         In further promoting Malaysia, a dance group called Swatari comprising of eight children aged between 8 - 12 was specially brought in all the way from Malaysia to perform at the QSCC. Swatari which was formed by Datuk Suhaimi Mohd Zain or better known as Pak Ngah is one of the leading groups in Malaysia which have been actively involved in promoting Malaysian traditional dances locally and abroad. In Bangkok, the group had put up sterling performances when they awed the audience with various dances from zapin, dikir barat, inang, Indian and Chinese dances, orang asli Mah Meri dance and the creatively blended traditional dances from Sabah and Sarawak in one performance.

4.         Prior to the event, Tourism Malaysia had also organised a Thank You Party on 23 February 2011 at Chatrium Hotel in honour of numerous local travel agents who had been supporting Tourism Malaysia in the past years. Representatives from selected hotels and local media were also present in the fun-filled evening where other than listening to the thank you speeches, those present were also entertained with some live cooking demonstrations and video presentation, all tailored with the ultimate aim of further promoting Malaysia in the eyes of local people. A score of officials from the Embassy was also present adding colours to the evening. Some of those present also walked home with various prizes from the lucky draw held.

5.         While the general trend of tourism for 2010 was not as encouraging as in the past years due to various factors, domestically and globally, Tourism Malaysia Office in Bangkok is determined to ensure that it could optimise its roles in promoting Malaysia to the local Thais and tourists in Thailand consistent with the famous tagline of Malaysia Truly Asia.
