THE CURRENT SITUATION IN BANGKOK

In effort to pressure caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down, the anti-government movement protesters have been holding mass demonstration called ‘Bangkok Shutdown’ since 13 January 2014. While leader of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), Suthep Thaugsuban had announced that it was going to be a peaceful demonstration, there have been events of violent clashes as well as crimes involving weapons and explosives at the protest sites.

On 17 January 2014, a bomb exploded in the Banthat Thong area which killed one protester and injured 39 others followed by two separate bombings on 19 January 2014 near the Victory Monument that wounded 28 people while a rally guard suffered wound from a gun shot. Protest marches are expected to continue throughout the protest sites

In this regard, the Embassy of Malaysia in Bangkok is monitoring the situation closely and strongly advise Malaysians travelling to Bangkok to be extra cautious when in the vicinity of any large gathering, and to avoid seven main rally sites at major roads namely; Lumpini, Chaeng Wattana, Asok- Sukhumvit, Ratchaprasong, Pathumwan, Victory Monument and Lat Phrao.

As a result from the road blockades, you are also advised to manage your travel plan wisely as there might be mobile inconvenience and to avoid missing flights.
