VISIT BY STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES COUNCIL OF UNIVERSITI MALAYA (MPMUM), 24 JANUARY 2011

The Embassy of Malaysia, Bangkok received a group of 25 students and lecturers from Universiti Malaya on 24 January 2011. The Malaysian students who are basically members of the Student Representative Council of the Universiti Malaya (MPMUM) were in Bangkok as part of the university’s Cross Border Programme which will take them to visit to leading universities in Bangkok, namely, Thammasat and Mahidol Universities.

2.         The objective of the programme is basically to expose the students on the intricacies of the religious, cultural and social differences by way of dialogue with their Thai counterparts. It goes without saying that the programme would also accord the students with the opportunity to interact and exchange ideas and at the same time sharpen their skills in English language.

3.         The group was greeted by Mr. Syed Bakri Syed Abdul Rahman, Charge d’Affaires upon their arrival. Mr. Syed Bakri himself conducted a short briefing on the work done by the Embassy so to give some basic perspectives to the students on the role and functions played by the Embassy. Some of the students also seized the opportunity to ask questions on various aspects such as political developments in Thailand, foreign direct investment and more complex issues like immunities for the diplomats as governed by Vienna Convention. Those questions were collectively answered by Mr. Syed Bakri as well as other officers who were present in the event.

4.         Certainly visit of such nature bodes very well with the aspiration of the Embassy to bring itself closer to the people consistent with its public diplomacy initiative.
