VISIT BY THE ELECTION COMMISSION OF MALAYSIA IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE GENERAL ELECTIONS IN THAILAND, 29 JUNE - 4 JULY 2011

In conjunction with the recently concluded General Elections in Thailand, the Elections Commission of Malaysia or better known as SPR had sent a strong 7-man team to Bangkok to observe the running of the elections together with other international observers from 12 other countries. The team was led by Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, Chairman of SPR and there were four other Commissioners and two accompanying officers.

Throughout their 5-day stay in Bangkok, the team was taken to witness the polling process at one of the polling stations at Laksi District in Bangkok as well as the one in Chatuchak area. They were also taken to the Council Office near Laksi District to inspect the location where the ballot papers were securely kept before being distributed accordingly. After the above visits took place, the delegations were taken to the ECT Headquarters to watch the tallying process together with other observers. Prior to the polling day, international observers were taken to various places in Bangkok, Chonburi and Chacheongsao to witness the distribution of ballot papers and boxes. They also had the chance to actually attend the political rally organised by the Democrats Party and the Pheu Thai Party which were held under heavy downpour at two different venues.

Overall, the visit could be described as very successful as members of the delegation as well as those from the Embassy had the opportunity to learn first hand from the electoral process in Thailand and witnessed the democracy process in Thailand. A brief afternoon tea session was also held with the Ambassador of Malaysia at the side line of the visit to enable the delegation from SPR to pay a courtesy call on the Ambassador and exchanged views on the current developments both in Malaysia and Thailand.
