VISIT TO MALAYSIAN-OWNED COMPANIES IN SAMUT PRAKAN AND CHONBURI

The tradition of visiting Malaysian-owned companies in Thailand continued when a delegation of 8 officers and staff from the Embassy visited two companies, namely, Morakot Industries Pcl and Sime O&M Thailand Co. Ltd. on 1 June 2010. The delegation was led by Dato’ Husni Zai Yaacob.

2.         The visit to these two companies in Bangkok and Laem Chabang was the first for the year 2010 after a number of visits being conducted in 2009. The Embassy has always aspired to undertake as many visits as possible in any given year in order to learn more and directly from the players on the ground. After all, it is in line with the economic diplomacy initiative undertaken by the Embassy.

3.         Morakot which is a subsidiary company of Sime Darby was established in 1981. The multiple awards winning company is undoubtedly the leading company in the production of cooking oil from palm oil in Thailand which controls 32% of the market share. Meanwhile, Sime O&M, another subsidiary company of Sime Darby is another leading company in providing power to many plants in Laem Chabang area. Its Baht3 billion revenue accounts almost 10% of Sime Darby’s total revenue.

4.         The visits were obviously a success given the interaction that the members of delegation had with the representatives from the two companies. Other than building up the much needed networking, the visits also accorded the delegation with the first hand information on the performance of the companies concerned and direct feedback on the operation of the plants including the problems that the management had to face.
