Important Information
- Both mail and in-person applications are permitted.
- Purpose: To ensure that any legal document by the U.S. government is recognized as legitimate and valid by the legal authorities in Malaysia
- It is recommended to obtain multiple copies of the certificates to handle simultaneous legal processes in Malaysia or as a safeguard against misplacement.
Guideline for Legalization of Documents
- Notarization: The certificate must first be notarized by a Notary Public using their exact name as it appears on their notary certificate of appointment, along with their stamp or seal. Birth, Death, Marriage, and Non-Marital Status certificates must be certified by a recognized official in the county where the event was recorded or certified by the Registrar of Vital Records.
Types of U.S. official document / Certificate: Birth, Death, Marriage, College Degrees, etc.
- Authentication: After notarization, send the documents to the Secretary of State or Office of the Lieutenant to be authenticated with an Apostille.

- Consular Legalization: Once authenticated with an Apostille, submit the documents to the Consulate for necessary legalization.
