INTERVENTION BY

MR. AHMAD RADZI MOHD ZIM

LONG-TERM DELEGATE TO THE 77TH SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

DURING THE INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE WITH

MR. EDGAR CORZO SOSA

CHAIR OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE PROTECTION OF THE RIGHTS OF ALL MIGRANT WORKERS AND MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILIES

THIRD COMMITTEE OF THE 77TH UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK, 18 OCTOBER 2022

Madam Chair,

Malaysia would like to thank Mr. Edgar Corzo Sosa, Chair of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, for his comprehensive briefing on the Committee's programmes and activities under its mandate.

Migrants play an important role in Malaysia's development efforts. According to the Department of Statistics of Malaysia, there are approximately 2.3 million migrant workers in Malaysia to date. As receiving country, Malaysia is committed to protecting the rights of migrant workers and members of their families. Although Malaysia is not yet Party to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (ICRMW), the Government has undertaken various initiatives and efforts to enhance the protection of migrant workers domestically. We have enacted policies and also continue to review and amend relevant domestic legislation to align with international labour standards. Amongst others, the Government is currently implementing the National Action Plan of Forced Labour (NAPFL) 2021-2025, which outlines strategic goals to eliminate forced labour in all its forms in Malaysia.

Madam Chair,

Our question to the Chair of the Committee is as follows, are there any particular best practices, based on the Chair of the Committee’s observations, that have proven to maximise the potential benefits of migration and minimise cost implications on countries of origin, transit and destination?

I thank you.
