INTERVENTION: 402ND MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE EXERCISE OF THE INALIENABLE RIGHTS OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE (CEIRPP), 4 FEBRUARY 2021

INTERVENTION BY
MR. MOHD HAFIZ OTHMAN
MINISTER COUNSELLOR
PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

AT THE 402nd MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE EXERCISE OF THE INALIENABLE RIGHTS OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE (CEIRPP)

NEW YORK, 4 FEBRUARY 2021

Mr. Chair,

At the outset, I wish to congratulate you and the Bureau members on your re-election today. Please count on my delegation's support to you and the work of the Committee this year.

Mr. Chair,

2.   Allow me to take this opportunity to reaffirm Malaysia's solidarity and unequivocal support to the Palestinian people in their decades-long pursuit for their inalienable rights to establish an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. I would like also to commend Mr. Secretary-General for reaffirming the established position of the UN on the Israeli - Palestinian conflict.

3.   Malaysia will continue to play an active role in seeking a just and lasting solution to the conflict, including through this Committee and through our membership in the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories.

4.   Malaysia is pleased and honoured to collaborate with this Committee in hosting the International Conference on the Question of Palestine from 28-29 February 2020 in Kuala Lumpur, with the theme "Southeast Asian Support for the Rights of the Palestinian People." The Conference successfully brought together support from government and civil societies in Southeast Asia for the realisation of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

Mr. Chair,

5.   We also take this opportunity to welcome the decree issued recently by President Mahmoud Abbas to hold legislative and presidential elections this year. We are confident that the elections will contribute to the promotion of a strong and inclusive democratic institution in Palestine. At the same time, it would also contribute positively to the attainment of sustainable peace through a negotiated two-state solution.

6.   We also note that the Committee will convene a virtual meeting with the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Mr. Philippe Lazzarini, on 23 February with a view to help mobilise international solidarity with Palestinian refugees and UNRWA. In this regard, let me reiterate Malaysia’s unwavering commitment to the work and mandate of UNRWA.

7.   In closing, allow me to reaffirm Malaysia’s support to the Palestinian people in their quest for fundamental rights, particularly their inalienable right to self-determination and their rights for a dignified life, justice, and prosperity.

I thank you, Mr. Chair.
