INTERVENTION : HIGH-LEVEL THEMATIC DEBATE "MOMENT FOR NATURE", 19 JULY 2022

INTERVENTION BY H.E. AMBASSADOR SYED MOHAMAD HASRIN AIDID

PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

FOR

HIGH-LEVEL THEMATIC DEBATE

“MOMENT FOR NATURE”

19 JULY 2022, 10.00 AM – 6.00 PM, GENERAL ASSEMBLY HALL, UNHQ

Mr. President,

Thank you for organising this important debate.

2.       Climate change is one of the existential threats to humanity. The IPPC already issued a “code red” warning for humanity in its Sixth Assessment Report. We know what is to be done. But, are we really prepared to embark on a green transition? On this note, Malaysia wishes to add its voice to the pressing needs of developing countries.

3.       First, we must address financing for effective climate actions for developing countries. Many climate-vulnerable countries are already approaching their limits of climate adaptation due to the pandemic. Global green transition would only be possible if developed partners were to remain committed to climate financing joint mobilisation.

4.       Secondly, we must also recognised that climate actions require continued policy support and mobilisation of public and private capital. Thus, it is critical to enhance collaborations and capacity-building in green development between the public and private sectors.

5.       Thirdly, business and society must include climate considerations in their conduct.

Mr. President,

6.       During COP 26, Malaysia renewed its commitment to achieve a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target at the earliest by 2050, and reduce carbon emission by 45 per cent in 2030. To support such efforts, Malaysia among others aims to develop a sustainable economy, including by launching a Voluntary Carbon Market and expansion of green tax incentives. We are also fully committed to localise the implementation of SDGs at the local level with the support of relevant stakeholders.

7.       To conclude, Malaysia stands ready to work in unity with the international community towards implementing concerted climate actions to overcome the threats of climate change.

I thank you, Mr. President.
