INTERVENTION (MAIN COMMITTEE III) TENTH REVIEW CONFERENCE OF THE TREATY ON THE NON-PROLIFERATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS, 10 AUGUST 2022
INTERVENTION BY
DELEGATE OF MALAYSIA
AT THE FOCUSED EXCHANGE OF VIEWS ON NUCLEAR SAFETY
MAIN COMMITTEE III
OF THE
TENTH REVIEW CONFERENCE OF THE
TREATY ON THE NON-PROLIFERATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS
NEW YORK, 10 AUGUST 2022
Madam Chair,
Nuclear safety must be a key principle in accessing and developing nuclear energy and technology for peaceful purposes. In this regard, Malaysia recognises the central role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in coordinating international efforts towards strengthening nuclear safety globally.
The Agency, through its statutory functions and longstanding expertise, continues to provide valuable assistance its Member States in strengthening their nuclear safety architecture, for both power and non-power applications. The nuclear safety standards developed by the IAEA help individual States discharge their primary responsibility for nuclear safety within their territory. We also see value in the sharing of best practices on nuclear safety among States.
As we strive towards achieving the highest level of safety, it is equally crucial that such efforts do not hamper the ability of NPT States Parties to access and develop the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and technology, as enshrined under Article IV of the Treaty.
Thank you, Madam Chair.
